1Hungary Initiative influenced local discourse during municipal elections!

Roma for 1 Hungary

Our initiative is a civic, advocacy platform of Roma organizations and individuals in Hungary –  achieved to declare new vision about one Hungary. Since this summer, we have been working on two-dozen municipalities with the aim: we can overcome on the opposites, as joint problems and issues can connect people. Problems identified by Roma are actually, the issues of the whole municipality, and what is more, Roma want the same as others (work, quality education, well developed infrastructure etc.). After elections, we continue our cooperation with Roma communities, elected officials and political parties, in order to find answers and solutions for the problems of municipalities.

It seems, that our framework – that public discourse should be about community issues and not hate and anti-Gypsyism  – shared by not only ordinary people, but politicians, too!

This summer, we worked together on the 1Hungary Declaration with more than 40 NGOs and six political parties, which declared we all fight against anti-Gypsyism in Hungary. We saw that we should not stop here, because basic principles should reach wider publicity and citizens.

During the local elections, our questionnaires were completed by thousands, then 3000 inhabitants, activists, and candidates participated in our forums, discussing the most important issues of the municipality. During these events, we worked on the declarations (1Nyíregyháza Declaration, 1Szeged Declaration etc.) which were signed by 2955 citizens and 125 candidates joined these declarations. As 1 Hungary Initiative is a non-partisan platform, we could achieve that thousands of people started the dialog after decades of none participation! Our attendees called these events “historical”, as they have not been actively participated in a wide, constructive and multicolored public event, where they could talk real issues.

People never experienced that many of well-prepared local Roma activists ensured the implementation of fair and democratic local elections! We Belong Here Association – core member of 1Hungary Initiative – trained more than 300 local Roma observers, who helped the work of the electoral offices. Local Roma voices demonstrate unity and determination, as never seen before!

Couple of day after of the local elections, we are happy to see that community members, 12 mayors and more than 50 councilors willing to play important role in solving local problems. We believe, people feel there is hope for change, as their voice is heard and Roma became active actor of building 1Hungary!

In the capital, more than 2000 people and the new mayor joined the declaration of We Belong Here Association, which include the most important issues of Roma in Budapest!

There is 1Hungary! We build it together!
